Immigration Promoters Hate Free Speech

Immigration reformers should take issue with proposals to reintroduce the so-called Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting. This would require TV and radio stations to “balance” all viewpoints with opposing views.

The Fairness Doctrine became law in 1949. The rationale for it was that the limited number of broadcast channels at that time were likely to be monopolized, a situation requiring government regulation. But as time went on, advances in technology, creating numerous channels, made his rationale obsolete.

The Doctrine was repealed in 1987. Its opponents stated that there was no longer any reason, if indeed there ever was, for allowing government to regulate and curtail the  freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. They added that the chief effect of the Doctrine was to stifle lively debate. Broadcasters preferred bland commentary to having to worry about “balance.”

The rise of talk radio after 1987 proved their point. For the first time populist viewpoints, such as those contending for immigration control, had a chance to reach a wide audience and challenge Establishment dogmas. In 2006 and 2007, talk radio played a major role in defeating the mass amnesties for illegal aliens proposed those years in Congress.

That role was not lost on amnesty advocates. Now they are beating the drums for restoration of the Fairness Doctrine, with talk radio clearly the target. Just recently two senators, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), called for restoration of Doctrine. In Harkin’s words, “We gotta get the Fairness Doctrine back in law again.”

Assaults against free speech are coming from other directions too. An organization called the National Hispanic Media Coalition has filed a petition with the FCC to inquire about the alleged “hate speech” of national commentators who have demanded action against illegal immigration. “Hate speech,” is a politically correct buzzword to defame any opinion that open borders advocates may happen to hate.

One who obsesses about “hate speech” is Janet Murguia, vice president of the Latino supremacist National Council of La Raza (The Race). According to Murguia, our Constitutional right to free speech must be curbed when speech becomes hateful. And she and her fellow Razistas will be more than happy to sit in judgment as to when that line is crossed.

The fact of the matter is that the mass-immigration open-border lobby knows that it can’t win an open and honest debate. Thus they want to shut down debate until they can import a new electorate, one more to their liking than the present one. Thus the issue is far more than one of immigration and border control. Beyond that, it is the future of liberty in America.

Patriots must resist the Fairness Doctrine, and similar schemes, with all their might. There is nothing fair about censorship and labeling honest commentary as hate.
